A significant number of revisions and corrections have been made in the new revision of EN ISO 22000:2018 Standard for Food Safety Management Systems – Requirements for Organizations in the Food Chain.

Starting from 29 December 2021, audits will be carried out according to this new and latest version.

The most important of these revisions and corrections are as follows:

  • Food Safety Management System Principles were introduced. Companies are expected to establish, manage and audit their systems according to these principles.

  • It was emphasized that the Process approach in the Food Safety Management System should be implemented more effectively.

  • The Risk-Based Thinking approach was incorporated into the process approach.

  • In particular, Organisational Risk Management and Hazard Analysis – Operational Processes approach modelling was introduced.

  • Both Risk-Based Thinking approaches were incorporated as “Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities” approach.

  • An item on “Planning of Changes” for FSMS was incorporated into the standard.

  • Additional items were introduced within the scope of externally-developed elements of the organizational FSMS; control of externally sourced processes, products and services; analysis and evaluation; disposal of non-conforming products.

  • Emergency preparedness and response

  • A new perspective has been introduced to the “Emergency Preparedness and Response” item.

  • A different approach was introduced to the item on Hazard Analysis – Operational Risk Management and Critical Control Point (CCP) measures.

  • The standard items were arranged under 10 topics in accordance with the high level structure (HLS) principle, which aims at improving alignment between ISO management system standards.
