The training helps participants understand why sustainability reporting is now unavoidable and how to apply the VSME standard, a framework specifically developed for small and medium-sized enterprises. Training Content

Module 1: The Changing Face of Sustainability for SMEs

This module explains why sustainability is no longer the exclusive domain of large corporations and why it has become critical for SMEs that wish to remain part of international value chains.

Through concrete examples, participants see how large companies — influenced by global regulations such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) — increasingly request ESG data from their SME suppliers for inclusion in their own reports. The module highlights that such requirements will continue to expand, reshaping business expectations for smaller enterprises.

Module 2: Risks and Opportunities for SMEs

Participants evaluate the specific risks of inaction, including:

  • Loss of market share and customer relationships,
  • Falling behind more sustainable competitors, and
  • Reputational damage in domestic and international markets.

Conversely, the module showcases the opportunities for proactive SMEs, such as:

  • Strengthening competitiveness and brand value,
  • Gaining new export and partnership opportunities,
  • Building credibility with banks and investors, and
  • Achieving cost reductions through efficiency improvements.

Module 3: Understanding the VSME Standard

This module introduces the VSME (Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs) — the simplified, proportionate framework designed to reduce the reporting burden for small and medium-sized businesses.

Participants learn that while VSME covers the same key ESG topics addressed by larger-company standards (such as ESRS), it does so through a streamlined and capacity-appropriate structure.

VSME is presented as an “SME Shield” — a practical tool that clarifies what information SMEs need to disclose, how to organize data, and how to ensure transparency and consistency without over-complexity.

Module 4: Step-by-Step Sustainability Reporting for SMEs

In this final module, participants follow a step-by-step roadmap to prepare a sustainability report aligned with the VSME standard.

The module emphasizes that successful reporting is a collaborative process requiring input from finance, HR, operations, and leadership teams alike.

Participants learn how to:

  1. Build sustainability awareness across the organization,
  2. Plan internal data-collection processes,
  3. Conduct stakeholder engagement and (double) materiality analyses,
  4. Establish reliable and auditable data systems, and
  5. Transform collected data into a credible, VSME-compliant sustainability report.
