Sustainability Reporting Training for SMEs (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises)
This program is designed for SME executives and key personnel who recognize that sustainability has become a business necessity—but are unsure where to begin.
The training helps participants understand why sustainability reporting is now unavoidable, and how to apply standards tailored for SMEs, such as the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for Non-Publicly Accountable SMEs (VSME).
Participants learn how sustainability reporting can both meet customer and regulatory expectations and deliver tangible business benefits—from greater access to finance to enhanced operational efficiency.
Training Content
Module 1: The Changing Face of Sustainability for SMEs
This module explains why sustainability is no longer confined to large corporations and why it has become essential for SMEs seeking to remain part of international supply chains.
Through real examples, participants see how frameworks such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) have led large companies to request ESG data from their suppliers, and why these requirements will continue to expand.
Module 2: Risks and Opportunities for SMEs
Participants assess the specific risks of failing to meet sustainability expectations — including loss of market access, competitive disadvantage, and reputational harm.
At the same time, the opportunities for early adopters are discussed:
- Strengthening competitiveness and export potential,
- Building credibility with investors and banks, and
- Achieving efficiency gains that reduce operational costs.
Module 3: The VSME Standard for SMEs
This module introduces the VSME (Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs) — a practical framework designed to simplify sustainability reporting for smaller businesses.
Participants learn that VSME covers the same core ESG topics as the standards applied by large companies (such as ESRS) but uses a proportionate, capacity-based approach that minimizes reporting burden.
VSME is presented as a guiding framework that clarifies which data SMEs need to disclose and how, enabling consistency, credibility, and comparability without excessive complexity.
Module 4: Step-by-Step Sustainability Reporting for SMEs
The final module provides a clear, step-by-step roadmap for preparing an SME sustainability report.
It emphasizes that reporting is a cross-departmental effort, requiring collaboration among finance, HR, operations, and other key functions.
Participants learn how to:
- Build awareness among leadership and employees,
- Plan internal data-collection processes,
- Conduct stakeholder and (double) materiality analyses,
- Establish reliable data systems, and
- Convert this information into a VSME-compliant sustainability report.
